It feels so different from any other places in Seoul.

Hwanghak dong flea market (황학동 벼룩시장) is an extensive used-goods market with over 500 shops. In the past, the Hwanghak-dong flea market was the nation’s trade center for antique goods, but now, the market offers a variety of products including cameras, refrigerators, washing machines, TVs, watches, stationary, imported goods, compasses, antique cameras, perfume, old furniture, and more.

Flea Markets in Seoul

The Seoul Folk Flea Market which celebrated the first anniversary of its opening on April 26 has undergone transformation as a marketplace in the heart of the city. Since its opening in 2008, several efforts have been made to make the place more convenient and attractive.

To ease the parking problem, the public parking lot has been expanded to accommodate 102 vehicles. Eighty-three traffic signs and information signs have been installed in the market’s vicinity. Changes have been made in product offerings and store locations as well. Cultural and artistic performances have been introduced, too. The Seoul Folk Flea Market is being promoted as a place for foreign tourists to visit and the façade has been redesigned to reflect the market’s concept as a folk flea market.

Shops at the Seoul Folk Flea Market sell items at fixed price and credit cards are accepted. People ranging in age from 20s to70s visit the market, looking for rare and unique items from the old days or antiques.

Any individual or groups can also sell their items at the Seoul Folk Flea Market. The market also runs a creative studio where visitors can try their hands at making folk items.

On the second floor, Boradong, visitors can buy handicrafts, traditional liquor and regional specialties from Jeju-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Award-winning, high-quality souvenirs are on sale at the gift shop. These include aprons adopted from Korean traditional hanbok, Hahoe masks, handmade sops, bookmarkers and postcards that are all sold at a lower price than elsewhere.

A special market convenes every weekend and unique items are displayed and sold at the Seoul Folk Flea Market gate as “This Week’s Unique Item.” Auctions are also held on the stage, offering an opportunity to buy items at a low price.
